In Ecuador 70% of the population lives in poverty which is concentrated around the big cities. This uncontrolled growth from the urbanisation process is quickly leading to the emergence of slums around these cities. These slums are characterised by the lack of infrastructure - drainage, water supply, transport systems, schools, kindergardens and basic medical care.
The buildings lack the sanitary facilities necessary for basic hygiene and several extended families may live in one single room and share one source to of water to use for personal hygiene, to clean clothes and for cooking. Such areas have a high rate of violence and drug addiction which leads to problems on the streets as well as within the families.
