Professional formation
There are a number of professional workshops offering half-day projects. These workshops are taken by accomplished instructors, the “Maestros” and they aim to help the children to integrate into the formal working sector.
The Bakery
In the bakery, the children learn the basic knowledge of baking. They are taught how to make different sorts of bread and pastry and the foundations of food science and nutrition, hygiene and also how to use baking devices like a dough machine and an oven. Thanks to a generous donation from Switzerland the bakery equipment could be extended to include an industrial oven which boosted the bread production in both quantity and quality. Bread is produced for the project’s own consumption as well as for external orders, which yield further income for the project.
The Jewellery
The children working in the jewellery workshop produce necklaces, charms and earrings out of silver using their own creativity. Such work requires much skill, patience and precision. The most beautiful pieces are sold on Swiss markets, again providing financial support for the project on-site.
The carpentry
The Carpentry workshop is fitted out with different machines and all the necessary tools. The apprenticeship starts with making simple objects (boxes, frames, puzzles) and within three years, the children acquire more and more competence so that they can eventually work as trained carpenters in a carpenter’s shop. Besides the practical carpentry skills, they also learn technical drawing as part of the workshop.
The Tailoring
In the tailoring workshop, a professional tailor teaches the basic knowledge of tailoring and sewing. The tailor shop is also open for young mothers who would like to offer their freelance tailor work afterwards. Many articles for daily use, garments and decorations are made and these are also sold at local markets.
